PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

  • Advising and Supporting: In my current Graduate Assistantship I am a Career Coach for Western Kentucky University’s Owensboro campus. I assist future, current, and former students in career planning, resume writing, cover letter development, internship placement, mock interviewing, and effective job search techniques.

  • Assessment, Evaluation, and Research: I have conducted surveys and collected feedback to attempt to implement research on the effectiveness of preparedness for community college students attending a university. I also hold a certification in Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training.

  • Law, Policy, and Governance: I have written and assembled a Legal Guidebook for Academic Advising and How to Stay Out of Court. This involved structured outlining and descriptions of case studies and techniques on how to avoid issues while advising students.

  • Leadership: I am currently the Coordinator of the Economic Development through Guidance Education (EDGE) Program at WKU Owensboro. This program is designed to benefit students while attending this institution. They are to complete an individualized career plan, complete all three phases of DLI, attend a networking event, participate in an internship or directed volunteer experience, and complete a professional portfolio. Students who complete this program will have demonstrated extraordinary effort to improve their professional skills.

  • Student Learning and Development: While studying student development theories I have a stronger knowledge of the developmental aspects students experience while attending college. Arthur Chickering’s Seven Vectors Theory describes the progress of each student and what they are going through during each stage of their college life. This includes: achieving competence, managing emotions, autonomy, developing mature interpersonal relationships, establishing identity, developing purpose, and developing integrity.

  • Professional Development: I am also a facilitator of the Dynamic Leadership Institute (DLI) for WKU Owensboro. I have presented on the following topics: Effective Communication, Group Dynamics in Problem Solving, Effective Decision Making and Consensus Building, Resume Development, and Interviewing Techniques.
